Playing in the Mud
Once we discovered the benefits of using Dead Sea mud on the skin we immediately started our research and testing of this ingredient. About 4 years ago Linda made soap with mud and we made every effort to convince people of its benefits and the advantages of using this particular soap. People looked at me as if I had lost my mind suggesting they actually bathe with mud. After all, the purpose of bathing is to get the dirt off not wash with it. We did have a few people willing to try it but not many at that time. Then came Irena's Spa Ice soap made with a very high concentration of salt, this also took a lot to get folks to give it a try but try it they did. Susan then came up with the idea of making a cream facial cleanser similar to the goat milk facial cleanser, using Dead Sea mud instead of goat milk. Now we are seeing a lot of big name brands out there with large marketing budgets talking about products made with Dead Sea mud and salt. The difference is our ingredients vs their ingredients. The only thing in common is the mud. Our bar soap is made with ingredients far superior to what is being offered by this big name brand and more than likely a lot more mud and salt. I am not sure they even offer a cream facial cleanser that not only deep cleans but if left on the skin for a few minutes its similar to having a facial while you cleanse and moisturize. Through our persistence and our willingness to give samples to anyone that will accept them, men, women and teens are experiencing the benefits of bathing in Dead Sea mud and salts.
The benefits provided by use of the mineral salts and/or mud from the Dead Sea are truly amazing although, it is no secret. The Dead Sea has been known for its healing benefits as early as the time of Abraham. Throughout history the Dead Sea is mentioned for medical benefits as well as cosmetic use. Marc Antony fought for possession of this area and won, for his beloved Cleopatra.
Reportedly, the Dead Sea contains 21 minerals, twelve of these are found in no other sea or ocean.
- Sodium - ions remove skin scales, binding the water and generate a feeling of suppleness, ideal for very dry skin.
- Magnesium - essential for cell metabolism. Testing of skin scales of patients with psoriasis has found a significant deficit of magnesium.
- Potassium - improves oxidation.
- Bromide - has a very relaxing effect.
- Bitumen - a natural tar acts as an anti-inflammatory agent.
- Chlorine - vital for cell metabolism.
- Iodine - necessary for the production of the hormone thyroxin, vital for both energy and cell metabolism.
- Calcium - strengthens cell membranes and cleanses the pores.
- Zinc - enzymatic regulation of cell proliferation.
Having read all of this and learning skin care products made with the salt, mud or a combination of both have the ability to:
- improves blood circulation and promotes cell regeneration
- exfoliates, deep cleans the skin removing impurities and toxins
- proven to provide relief for psoriasis, eczema, acne and wrinkles
- moisturizes and helps natural skin hydration
What can be more healthful or natural than playing in the mud? If you're in the area, stop by the store and pick up a sample of our mud soap. A purchase is never required.

Ethnic Skin and Hair Care
Ashy skin? Dry scalp? Malnourished hair? All of these problems are significant to ethnic skin and hair. Finding the correct proportions of essential oils and butters without the petroleum byproducts and hard waxes like carnauba, has long been sought in ethnic skin and hair care. Petroleum byproducts are known to clog pours while hard waxes coat the skin and hair shaft not allowing the much needed absorption of nutrients.
Spa Splendors Hair Butter blends Shea butter with Olive and Jojoba Oils which have long been known for their wonderful healthy skin and hair properties. In addition the use of Essential Oils specifically chosen for their beneficial properties to the hair and scalp, makes Hair Butter supreme for not only your hair, but for your whole body. It is all natural with no preservatives which means no Parabens or other harmful manmade chemicals.
Shea butter contains high percentages of Vitamin A and Vitamin E. Vitamin E has long been known to increase blood flow to the skin thus bringing more oxygen to the skin surface. http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/5000/pdf/5554.pdf “Vitamin E, a fat-soluble vitamin, is an antioxidant vitamin involved in the metabolism of all cells. It protects vitamin A and essential fatty acids from oxidation in the body cells and prevents breakdown of body tissues.”
http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/5000/pdf/5551.pdf “Vitamin A, a fat-soluble vitamin, plays essential roles in vision, growth, and development; the development and maintenance of healthy skin, hair, and mucous membranes; immune functions; and reproduction.”

Essential Oil Usage 1
Everyone sees all the volumes of information on essential oils and aromatherapy and wants to try and see if it will help. Most do not realize that they are already using aromatherapy in their everyday lives. Lavender scented candles and fabric softener, citrus scented house cleansers, mint candies. They are all part of aromatherapy. Here at Coast to Coast Soapworks, we do use many essential oils in our products. Much thought and research goes into every scent created with essential oils. It is our responsibility to make sure these blends are beneficial and not harmful to our customers.
A good beginning place is to start with cleansing or detoxifying. Detoxifying is shedding the body and mind from all the toxins that are accumulated in our day to day lives. A blend of Juniper, Rose Geranium, Lavender, Cypress and citrus among others are blended with a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil to create an overall detoxifying blend. This blend may be used in a warmer or as a perfume you can even put a few drops in the tub for a relaxing soak. Pure essential oils should always be mixed with carrier oils for use on the skin due to the strengths and possible toxic skin reactions. There are few essential oils that are an exception to this rule. It is always better to err on the side of safety.

Some herbs we use
I love working with herbs and essential oils. They are nature’s pharmacy as well as it culinary store. Parsley eaten after a meal freshens the breath.
Rosemary, one of my favorites, is an astringent and stimulant. When used in hair products, it helps to stimulate the hair bulbs and calm dandruff and scruff. In stimulating the scalp with rubbing, it invigorated the blood and oxygenation to the surface. These actions promoted healing cuts and scrapes as well. The astringent part of Rosemary helps in keeping wounds clean and germ free. In aromatherapy, it is used as a stimulant to bring the mind to a more active state.
Lavender has long been known as the “Soother”. It calms and soothes the skin and mind.
Skin irritations appear more soothed and calm in the inflamed areas. The scent is widely used to cover more medicinal aromas in many medicines.
Chamomile is another soother. It helps to relieve the pain from bruises and cuts. When used in hair products, it helps soothe the scalp from all the different stresses we put our hair through. It helps relieve the itchiness from dry skin also.

Labeling Games
My favorite is the one brought to me by a customer, asking if we carry a specific product. We do not sell any commercially manufactured products. Her question was fine with me, she wouldn't know if she didn't ask. This product claimed 100% pure Shea Butter. Opening the jar I could see immediately it was an emulsion, without looking at the ingredient panel this product was indeed not 100% pure shea butter. The shea butter used in the product I'm sure was 100% pure but the finished product most certainly is not. If this were true the ingredient panel would read "Ingredients: Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) fruit. Nothing more. However, this was not the case. Shea Butter being listed 7th in the list of ingredients does not qualify this as 100% pure. How sad is it that a large manufacturer has to use deceitful marketing tactics in order to sell their products? Pretty pathetic, in my opinion.
Manufacturers that use these labeling tactics are targeting an uninformed market. My daily encounters with the public leads me to believe these particular manufacturers will soon be changing their game. People are asking questions, very good questions. They are becoming more and more informed as the days pass by. Information is a powerful tool, provided you have accurate information.
To list an ingredient on the front label the only requirement is that there be a minimum of 1% of that specific ingredient in the formula. Since most of us formulate in small batches of 5 gallons or less that would be a grand total of 6.4 ounces in a 640 ounce batch. Not very much at all. Not enough for me to use that ingredient as a selling point.
The best advise I can offer is, become informed. Ask questions. If you don't feel as though your answer is satisfactory or informative enough ask for literature, research on the web, be satisfied with the information you receive and ask more questions. Information is a wonderful thing as well as very important. After all, we are talking about the health of your skin, the largest, most abused organ of the body. I spend a good part of the day answering questions and offering information that people don't even realize they want or need. I am guilty of getting a bit to technical at times but I know when I've gone that far. People get a look in their eyes, its that "HUH?" look. Thankfully, I'm quickly forgiven. I can't stress enough the importance of asking questions about the ingredients you are considering putting on your body and the bodies of your loved ones.

Elite Pet Care Products
A good quality shampoo and conditioner should not only clean the skin and coat it should bring both to a top notch healthy condition. Ever notice a dog scratching not long after it has been bathed? Harsh detergents in commercially made shampoos will cause dry, flaky, itchy skin. Not much different than commercial soaps for humans. Our shampoo and conditioner is formulated using oils specifically for skin and hair conditioning properties. The botanicals and essential oils added alleviate irritation below the surface of the skin, eliminating dry, itchy, flaky skin.
The key to using our products is to remember less is more. It doesn't require a large amount of either product to cleanse and condition the skin and coat. Once you have wet the animal down good apply just a small amount working it deep into the skin, you will feel the gentleness of these products on your hands. You can always apply more product as needed. Working the shampoo and conditioner into the skin and leaving it on for a few minutes will provide greater results than you would normally expect from a shampoo and conditioner. Your dogs will feel the difference immediately and the results will show in their coat after the first use. These products are gentle enough for humans.
Before we introduced pet care products to our line it was tried and tested on humans, to their great satisfaction. One day a friend, who has a slew of dogs told me she used it on one of her dogs and could not believe the results. From that point on we went to work making minor changes to the product. We added essential oils known to relieve irritation above and below the skin and that would provide a pleasant odor while repelling most insects. After testing on many breeds and gathering feedback we have come to the conclusion that what we have to offer is one of the highest quality shampoos and conditioners available on today's market.
I cannot express to anyone the depth of my gratitude, for the clients we have that are so willing to work with us in perfecting these products.

Westminster Kennel Club
Congratulations to the many of our clients that have shown at Westminster this week. The invitation to compete is an honor itself.
My favorite part of any show or sporting event is Youth or Junior Handlers as it is referred to in dog shows. This years winner for 1st place is the Eastern Shore's very own Zack Helmer, Easton, MD. In this event it is the handler that is being judged moreso than the dog. Zack showed a Petite Bassets Griffons Vendeen aka PBGV. The first time I heard this mentioned was at Salisbury Kennel Club when a handler told me what she was handling I thought for sure she said she had "heebie jeebies". Once I saw the dogs my first thought was the name is bigger than the dog. Beautiful was my second thought. Bear with me, I'm learning as fast as I can.
AM/Int CH Bendill's Wee Precious Perry received the Award of Merit in the Silky Terrier group. Owners/Breeders Mark Benson and James Dillman Handler Barbara Beissel PHA, AKC registered handler. Perry is now retired living a "dogs" life down in sunny Florida. I'm sure Mark and Jim will spoil him rotten if they can get him to leave his "mommy" Barbara. I've met the dog, his owner Mark and his handler Barbara. This little guy just loves her. I've seen him surrounded by folks, being showered with attention. Enter Barbara and Perry immediately focuses his attention on her. To say he adores her is an understatement. Perry's retirement is much deserved. His career show record is outstanding, far to long to list here, oodles and oodles of Best of Breed, and Group wins. This would account for him being America's #1 Silky Terrier and All Breed 2004, 2005, 2006. I'm proud to have met these fine people and their beautiful dog. I was also proud as well as caught off guard, when Mark was asked if he used Elite botanical pet care products, at the Salisbury Kennel Club Show and he pulled a bottle out of his bag. Thanks Mark, we appreciate the endorsement.
CH Murphy Mason Midnight Rambler received the Award of Merit in the Bloodhound group. Owners Kathy Robertson & Kathryn Reid. Breeder Susan Powers. Handler Cassandra Williams of Salisbury, MD. He is ranked the #3 Bloodhound in the country. His litter mate CH Murphy's Continental Drift also won an Award of Merit. I'm sorry to admit I don't know much about this breed other than they are BIG. He is so big I have to wonder why Cassie doesn't just ride him around the ring instead of leading him. Could be because he is a dog and not a horse, that would be my guess. I would like to link to his record, I couldn't find him on Info Dog.
Westminster is not the only show our clients are showing their dogs. The AKC/Eukanuba National Championship was held in Long Beach, CA this past December. A few of our clients dogs were invited to participate. CH Dawnwinds Masquerader is one. Marie Hammond is quite proud of her guy, he's done well for her this year. I hope she continues the success. Marie is also a great wealth of information when it comes to Silkies, and she doesn't mind sharing it, even with folks like me that admittedly don't know much about dogs.
Many breeds are using our products with great success, Cavaliers, Viszlas, Goldens, Silkies, Yorkies that I am aware. Of course there are many pet owners using the products as well stating how much they are very happy with the results they have achieved. I'll save that for another post. Take a peek at our showcase, if you don't see your dog there, send me a picture, I'll be happy to put it on the site.
Congratulations to all that endeavor to be the best.

A Little about myself Earth Scents
I live in SE Washington State in the beautiful town of Walla Walla. This is a mainly agricultural area with 3 colleges. We have a community college, Walla Walla College and Whitman College. We are nestled in the valley of the Blue Mountains. Our weather is generally moderate with some rain. We are not near as wet as the western side of the state. I have lived here off and on since I was 2 years old. I was born in Illinois. My mother still lives here and my father lives in Quincy, Illinois.
I have a BS degree in Agricultural Economics. I have had many jobs. I have worked in Accounting, Administrative Assistant, Director of Plant Services at one of the colleges and currently one of the Director's for Activities at a local nursing home. I just love my current job. It is such a rewarding job helping our elderly enjoy their day. I have so much fun and the resident's respond very well to me. This is the easiest job I have ever had in my life. I feel that this is where I am supposed to be currently in my life.
I have lived in the country all of my life. I have had animals all my life. I have a spoiled rotten little Min Pin "Katy" that I love dearly. She is such a wonderful part of my life now that my children are grown. My first love is horses. I have raised, shown and trained Quarter Horses most of my life. I started riding when I was 2 years old. I still have one old Quarter Horse mare and 2 miniature horses. I started raising dairy goats in 1990. This was due in part to my children and their 4-H projects. I raise Alpine and Toggenburg dairy goats under the herd name Waiilatpu. The indian name for the Whitman Mission. We live 1/2 a mile from their. Waiilatpu means "land of the rye grass". You can still see the ruts from the conestoga wagons at the Mission. We show goats in the North West. We also show at Nationals when they are located close enough. We will be in Gillette, Wyoming for Nationals this July. Our goats start kidding around the 18th of February so my vacation is about over. We have had great success in the show ring. We love the genetics involved with the dairy goats and their wonderful personalities. We also love to make products for our own use with their milk. This is where the Earth Scents soap business came into play. We started the business in 2000 with goat milk soaps. We have perfected making goat milk soaps and feel we have some of the finest smelling, moisturizing soaps on the market. I have studied and studied this art. I have put in hours and hours of research into the products. I started to make the soaps for my own personal use. I wanted a product far superior to what was on the market. I feel that I have accomplished this goal. We have since branched into cream soaps, lotions, creams, masks, toners, etc. I love the science of this industry.
I hope that you folks will give us some feedback concerning our current products and also future products. We would like to know what you want, what you expect. This will make us more responsive to your needs.

Shea Butter and SheaMazing Line
Shea Butter (Butyrospermum parkii) is made from the fruit of the Karite tree which grows in Africa. It is cold pressed with no chemicals added. It may be used pure or in combination with other butters and oils.
Shea Butter contains natural vitamins A and E, which makes it extremely beneficial to the skin. High in vitamin A, Shea Butter is an excellent aid in skin afflictions to include dry, rashes, peeling, blemishes, itchiness, sunburn, skin cracks, rough calloused skin (like heels and elbows), Cold weather, stretch marks, insect bites, poison ivy and poison oak, eczema and dermatitis. It also is a soother for skin damaged by minor burns. Vitamin E aids the micro-circulation to the skin, resulting in increased blood supply. It also has been found to aid the effects of environmental exposure.
Our It’s SheaMazing product line uses Shea butter as the basis to provide our customers with the moisturizing repair all skin craves. Our Soap Cakes contain an unheard of 20 % Shea Butter, which helps the body replenish itself while cleansing. To stay true to our extremes the soapcakes are named that for a reason, they are huge. Not your typical “cake o’ soap”, these massive bars weigh anywhere from 7 to 9 ounces. Its rather difficult to be precise when hand cutting these cakes.
Our Shea lotion provides the finishing touch leaving the skin smooth and silky feeling. It helps provide your body with the additional moisture and vitamins it requires to be healthy. The light scent and silky feeling of this lotion is nothing less than Nirvana for the senses. None of our lotions are watered down and you definitely won’t be reaching for the lotion bottle as often as repeated with other lotions. The same can be said of our Silk ‘n Milk and Hemp lotions. The options for lotions are available, the choice is up to the individual.
Long before the “It’s SheaMazing” product line was developed I had a deep love for this ingredient. Living in the desert takes its toll on the skin. Anytime you can walk outside and feel the moisture being drawn from the skin you know you need extreme protection for your skin as well as your hair. The love affair with Shea Butter began. When combined with various extracts and essential oils, it makes a fantastic hair butter for ethnic hair care. While moisturizing, stimulating and soothing the scalp, the hair is benefiting from the added moisture and protection provided by Shea Butter. There is no wax or petrolatum to weigh the hair down and leave it greasy, quite the contrary. The hair is left moisturized yet not greasy, light as opposed to weighted down with waxes. Combining essential oils and extracts that are known to soothe irritation and stimulate blood circulation encouraging growth, hair can’t be anything but healthy and happy and most of all, look its best. A very important thing to note about Original Hair butter, Natural Indulgence, is that it may be used from your head to your toes. Safe for even the most tender skin, being all natural and containing no preservatives.
Although Natural Indulgence is not in our Coast To Coast Product line, it is available through our retail location or my website. I wasn’t going to blog about this product until it was strongly suggested I do so. Donna can be rather, ummm persuasive, at times. J In fact, she insisted I mention this product due to the many testimonials given by customers at our retail location.
I’m Linda and I make the Shea Lotion and Soap Cakes. I hope you enjoy using them as much as I enjoy making them for you. I have been making soap with my family for about 45 years and thoroughly love what I do. All the new natural ingredients allow me to make products that are excellent for the body and soul.

New Improved Fresh Face
What is Fresh Face? It is a specially formulated facial moisturizer, toner and clarifying serum. The new and improved formula is focused more on maturing skin of all types. You don't have to be 50 for your skin to begin aging, quite the contrary. There are many young women with aging skin due to exposure to sun and wind damage, cleansing with harsh facial cleansers, heavy makeup. Whatever the reason, you will notice an improvement in appearance and feel after using just a few times. Fresh Face can be used daily or anytime you need a boost of moisture. It is fantastic under makeup. Never greasy.
Evening Primrose oil is reputed to heal skin irritations, increase hydration, moisturize dry, aging and chapped skin and maintains normal function of the epithelial barrier membrane. It also is known to help reduce wrinkles. Rose hip oil regenerates tissue, treats those pesky crows feet, helps heal sunburns, psoriasis and eczema while improving hydration. Add Jojoba oil to the mix and you've got an oil that creates a protective film over the skin sealing in moisture. Dissolves pore clogging matter and returns skin to a natural ph balance. Jojoba penetrates the pores quickly to reduce moisture loss. You can see why combining these oils in our serum is the right choice.
Botanicals play a major role in my life as well as in this product. We've used a plethora of herbs and botanicals for the astringent, emollience, regenerative, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits imparted.
Combining all of these things, I am of the opinion that it is one of the best available, then again, I am a bit biased. As the old commercial used to say "Try it, You'll like it".

Hemp Soap vs Big Brand Soap
Many items on the market today are called soap however, there are very few true soaps if any produced by the big name brand manufacturers. The only one I can think of right off the top of my head is Ivory. Although it is manufactured with not the greatest ingredients for moisturizing and nourishing the skin, it does clean. If I remember correctly the ingredients in Ivory are Sodium Tallowate, Sodium Cocoate, Sodium Palm Kernalate, Titanium Dioxide, this is the ingredient that prevents Ivory from being 100% pure, it is nothing more than a whitener. This is how they label the soap so they don't have to use the words Sodium Hydroxide (Lye). These ingredients are nothing more than Tallow an animal fat, probably beef, Palm Kernal oil and Coconut oil. Very inexpensive ingredients used for the sole purpose of cleansing and nothing more. But why is it so drying? During the saponification process of the oils, butters (fats) and alkali glycerin is produced. Glycerin being a natural humectant draws moisture from the air to the skin. Most large manufacturers extract the glycerin from the soap, this is why your skin feels dry and itchy. They've removed the best ingredient from the soap.
As a soapmaker I feel a responsibility to use the best ingredients available to produce the kind of soap I, myself wouldn't hesitate to use on my grandchildren. I have experimented with various oils and butters for years before I found that one recipe that does exactly what I feel a bar of soap should do.
A bar of soap should:
a) Cleanse deeply
b) Rinse cleanly
c) Nourish damaged skin
d) Moisturize deeply
e) Be gentle enough for a newborn.
We list all ingredients on our soaps so people can see what they will be using on their skin and to avoid any allergic reactions people might have to one or more of our ingredients. We believe in full disclosure of ingredient listings and do so on all of our products.
Back to my soap. I produce the hemp products for Coast To Coast Soapworks. I love hemp seed oil. As far as I am concerned there is no other oil that provides the nourishment of Hemp seed oil. One of the richest sources of Omega 3 and Omega 6 essential fatty acids as well as GLA (gamma linolenic acid) making it a superior natural emollient and moisturizer. The use of hempseed oil in soaps aids in soothing and restoring dry or damaged skin as well as assist in increasing natural moisture retention. Ok, so now you know I am a huge fan and supporter of hemp products. One other thing I might add, Hempseed oil is produced from sterile seed. There is less than 1% THC (psychoactive) found in industrial hemp. All of this to say, NO you will NOT test positive for marijuana.
I could talk about hemp for hours but I won't bore anyone any longer. Moving right along to other ingredients in our Hemp soap. Aloe for its healing and moisturizing benefits, Coconut oil also used for moisturizing, conditioning and a great lather, Olive oil for its gentleness and long lasting moisturizing benefits, Lard for its cleansing properties and creaminess,Shea butter, Africa's best kept secret, until the French found out about it, now we all benefit. Shea butter is not only known for its moisturizing benefits, it is known for its healing benefits as well. I won't go into the wonders of Shea Butter, I'll leave that to Linda, she produces our Shea Butter Soapcakes and Mega bars as well as our Shea Butter lotion.
The combined benefits of these oils produces the creamiest lathering soap I've ever made. Its like bathing with lotion.
New Improved Men's Skin Conditioner
This skin conditioner soaks in quickly with no greasy after feel. The combination of herbal extracts and oils makes this conditioner a winner.
Chamomile and Lavender extract are purported to have skin soothing properties that calm eczema and allergic reactions. It is also said that they have excellent anti-inflammatory properties.
Calendula extract is purported to soothe and restore the skin.
We use Witch Hazel Distillate for its excellent astringent properties.
In addition to these ingredients we add Kukui Nut oil. Cosmetic chemists say that this oil has an excellent skin feel. It is readily absorbed to all skin levels leaving no greasy after feel. It seems to make rough, chapped dry skin feel smooth, soft and silky. Kukui nut oil is a good protective oil, protecting against wind and sun burn. It is also believed to help prevent scarring.
We also add Allantoin, Panthenol, Silk Amino Acids and Vitamin E to round out is excellent skin loving formulation. Allantoin is said to help heal wounds and skin irritations and stimulate growth of healthy tissue. Panthenol is a humectant, emollient and moisturizer. Silk Amino Acids help moisture penetrate the skin and aid in skin healing. Vitamin E is often used in skin creams and lotions because it is purported to play a role in encouraging skin healing and reducing scarring after injuries such as burns.
This skin conditioning formula is among one of the best on the market. It comes in three fragrances. They are Bay Rum, Lime Mint and Outlaw. You can not go wrong with this product.
Welcome
I wanted to tell you about the "new" goat milk cream soap. It is made with pumpkin oil and pumpkin along with silk and rhassoul clay for a gentle exfoliation. It has the wonderful goat milk in it also. This product is formulated for your face. It helps to clear your face and keep it clear. You can use it every day or once a week.
